30g Protein Breakfast: 6 Australian Options Compared

Thirty grams of protein at breakfast has become the number everyone's chasing. It's a big target — protein at breakfast is the meal most Australians under-do, and 30g is roughly what a solid serve looks like.

But the painful part is actually hitting it. Thirty grams is five eggs, or 300g of Greek yoghurt, or 240g of cottage cheese. That's a lot of breakfast, and most of it needs cooking.

Here's what the realistic options actually cost you in protein, time and money.

6 Australian Options

Option Protein Prep + cleanup Cost per serve A complete meal?
5 boiled eggs ~32g ~10 min ~$3.30 No
300g Greek yoghurt ~30g 1 min ~$2.90 No
240g cottage cheese ~30g 1 min ~$2.50 No
Bacon and eggs ~28g ~15 min ~$4.00 No
Whey protein shake alone ~24g 2 min ~$1.20 No
QOTA Complete Chocolate 30g 2 min $4.21 Yes

Protein isn't the same as breakfast

Five eggs gets you 32g of protein and almost no carbohydrate, no fibre and very little of the micronutrient range. A whey shake gets you 24g of protein and essentially nothing else — no fibre, no essential fats, no vitamins or minerals to speak of. Greek yoghurt is closer, but you're still assembling the rest.

That's fine if breakfast is one part of a well-built day of eating. It's less fine if breakfast is the meal you routinely rush or skip, which for most people chasing a protein target is exactly the problem they're trying to solve.

What "complete" actually means

In Australia, formulated meal replacement is a defined category under the Food Standards Code, not a marketing phrase. To qualify, a serve has to deliver a minimum amount of protein and energy, plus at least a quarter of the recommended daily intake of a specified list of vitamins and minerals.

QOTA Complete Chocolate meets that standard. A QOTA Complete Chocolate serve is:

  • 30g protein
  • 26 vitamins and minerals
  • 492 calories — a proper meal, not a snack
  • Fibre and omega-3 and 6
  • 4.5 Health Stars, under the Australian Government's rating system
  • Two minutes, one shaker, no cleanup

The options breakdown

Eggs — the default, and a good one. Five eggs is genuinely 32g of protein and they're real food. The catch is ten minutes and a saucepan, and five eggs every morning gets old fast.

Greek yoghurt — the best low-effort real-food option. Around 10g of protein per 100g, so you need a solid 300g to hit the target, which is most of a small tub. Add fruit and oats and you've built something decent, at which point you're back to assembly.

Cottage cheese — higher protein density than yoghurt, around 12g per 100g, so a smaller serve gets you there. Not everyone's idea of breakfast.

Bacon and eggs — around 28g, so slightly short, and it's the most expensive and slowest on the list. A weekend option rather than a Tuesday one.

A whey shake on its own — fast and cheap, but 24g of protein and not much else. It's a supplement, not breakfast. Plenty of people drink one and then eat anyway.

QOTA Complete Chocolate — 30g of protein and the rest of a meal with it, in two minutes. More expensive than yoghurt or oats, cheaper than bacon and eggs, and the only one on the list that's a complete meal on its own. Contains oat, gluten, milk and soy — QOTA Vegan is the dairy-free option.

Frequently asked questions

How much protein is in QOTA? 30g per meal in Complete Chocolate, alongside 26 vitamins and minerals and 492 calories.

Is 30g of protein at breakfast a lot? It's more than most Australians have at breakfast, and it's roughly a standard serve. Five eggs, 300g of Greek yoghurt or 240g of cottage cheese all land around that mark.

What's the quickest 30g protein breakfast? A shake, at about two minutes. The difference is whether it's a protein shake — protein and little else — or a complete meal replacement with the vitamins, minerals, fibre and fats as well.

Is a meal replacement better than eggs? Not better — different. Eggs are whole food and cheaper per gram of protein. A formulated meal replacement is faster and covers the full nutrient range in one serve.

Can I have QOTA every morning? Yes. It's designed as a regular meal. It isn't intended as your sole source of nutrition.
